ABOUT
The Engine 59 is an independent practice built around a simple belief: meaningful design begins with continuous thinking.
It records what is noticed, questioned, connected and imagined — from everyday observations to abstract problems about society, technology, humanity and the future.
The essence and motivation of design are to constantly keep thinking—whether that involves reflecting on the current state of affairs, expressing dissatisfaction, raising questions, or envisioning the future.
“It is only when you care deeply enough about the world and your surroundings that you will acquire the ability to change it.”
This is because innovation, problem-solving and the delivery of value—the so-called ‘design value driven’ outcomes—all stem from the designer’s own continuous reflection; it is only through what they think, see and hear that meaningful results can be achieved. Whether it is identifying problems, focusing on abstract or macro-level issues, or paying attention to seemingly insignificant events, all are equally meaningful.
Today it is an individual practice. Its architecture remains open to becoming something collective.
